About the VOHVC
About our organization
As some of you may know VAFB had an OHV area two years ago near base housing. Most of you may not know why it was closed. The official reason why it was abruptly closed was due to UXO found on one of the trails. The UXO was eventually cleared however; it was not opened back up to motorized vehicles. The reason it did not open back up was due to the lack of organization and that people were not staying on authorized trails. It is now opened to non motorized use only.
This is where we come in. In February of 2007 we held a meeting to discuss ways-a-heads for a new OHV area. The first order of business was to locate an area that had minimal cultural and environmental issues. After several locations were shot down for one reason or another and a year later we settled on the area we have today. The area has minimal cultural and environmental issues and the terrain is very attractive for OHV use.
The only reason we have an
Phase one is opened with approximately 5 miles of roads and a half mile of fire break. The roads are pretty easy except for one steep climb. All the routes are opened to all OHVs. Trail # 1 is sandy with tight turns and a few minor wash outs. Be careful on this road, there are a lot of blind corners. Trail # 2 is a well maintained gravel road. Trail # 3 is a bit sandy with washouts. Be VERY careful on this road. It has deep craters and wash outs that could swallow your OHV. Trail # 4 is a windy and sandy road with a steep hill climb on the north side. This hill climb could be challenging when wet. The Fire break (FB# 1) is a very wide swathe with some steep hill climbs and very uneven terrain. This is the most attractive area in the park so far. You may ride back and forth, spin your tires and jump the hills. The reason for a fire break is to keep vegetation down. I’m sure we could help in this department. There are obvious boundaries in this fire break. It’s wide enough that no one should ever go off the graded path.
The Club has been issued a huge parking lot for Club members. Parking lot is the only place to stage your OHV. There is also a loading dock for your use. All OHV recreationists must enter through the main OHV/North Star gate. Members will need to sign in AND out of the Park.
Behind the parking lot is an OHV training area. This is a flat surface for training and practice only. Training classes will be held here on occasion when there are enough people to fill a class.
Future plans include a motocross track, kids play area, 4x4 obstacle course and 30+ miles of trails. Phase two trails will encompass a very large area and have many different skill levels. Hopefully we should start to open trails by the end of the year.
This is a great opportunity we have that most other bases cannot even think about. With all the property VAFB has it's still a privilege to be able to use our OHVs on base.
